Ficus (Indian Laurel Fig) Hedges and Trees

Ficus nitida

  • Best in Full Sun, Tolerates Some Shade - Evergreen
  • Regular water in Summer

Native to India and Malaysia, it is widely used as a street tree and as a formal hedge in Southern California. Grows at a moderate rate up to 40 ft. May be pruned at almost any time of year to size or shape desired. Be wary of planting near sidewalks, streets, plumbing, or septic systems because of invasive roots, but root guards can help reduce problems. Low temperatures can damage the tree. Thrips can be a nuisance, but are easy to control.
