This Sierra Madre project is a great example of how a small yard can become a complete outdoor living environment when every square foot is carefully planned. The client had recently built an ADU in the backyard, which left the property with a much smaller outdoor area than before. The original request was for a spa, but after discussing the layout, budget, and possibilities with Garden View Landscape, Nursery & Pools, we explained that for a relatively small increase in investment, the client could have both a spa and a compact dunking pool.
That decision changed the whole project. Instead of creating only a small spa area, we were able to design a true backyard oasis with water, dining, cooking, outdoor entertainment, fruit trees, privacy planting, useful access for the ADU, a kids’ play-friendly layout, and a better relationship between the main house, the ADU, and the yard.
This was not a large property where space could be wasted. The project required careful grading, permitting, setback coordination, pool placement, deck planning, privacy design, and creative use of the narrow areas between the structures. It is exactly the kind of difficult small-space landscape construction project where Garden View’s design/build process becomes valuable.
Turning a Spa Request into a Spa and Dunking Pool
The client originally wanted a spa. That made sense because the backyard was small after the ADU was built. But when we looked more carefully at the space, the grades, and how the family wanted to use the yard, we saw an opportunity. By slightly increasing the investment, the client could have a compact dunking pool along with the spa.
That is one of the advantages of working with a full-service landscape and pool construction company. We are not only trying to sell one feature. We are looking at how the whole property can be used better. In this case, adding the dunking pool made the backyard far more versatile. The family gained a place to cool off, relax, and enjoy the water, without overwhelming the small yard.
The pool and spa had to be designed to fit the property, not dominate it. The goal was to create a water feature that felt intentional, useful, and beautiful while still leaving room for dining, entertainment, circulation, planting, and family use.
Pool Placement for Children and Safety Planning
The homeowners have young children, so the location of the pool was especially important. We placed the pool on one side of the yard so the family could install a kiddie protection fence. That decision helped separate the water area from the rest of the outdoor living space and allowed the family to use the yard more comfortably.
On small properties, pool placement affects everything. If the pool is placed in the wrong location, it can block circulation, reduce usable play space, make fencing awkward, or make the yard feel cramped. Here, the pool location was chosen not only for appearance, but for family function and safety planning.
The result is a compact pool and spa area that works with the rest of the yard instead of taking it over. The family can enjoy the pool, but the yard still has room for gathering, dining, children, planting, and ADU access.
Solving the Grading Between the Main House and the ADU
One of the biggest challenges on this project was grading. The ADU had been built considerably lower than the original house, which created a difficult elevation relationship between the two structures. Without careful planning, the yard could have felt chopped up, awkward, or unusable.
Garden View solved this by using the pool itself as part of the grade transition. Near the ADU, the pool was built with a raised wall around one side. On the other side, the pool is level with the rest of the yard. This allowed the pool to respond to the grade change instead of fighting it.
That type of solution is important on tight properties. A pool is not just a pool. It can become a retaining element, a visual anchor, a seat wall, a grade transition, and a design feature. By shaping the pool to work with the different elevations, we helped connect the lower ADU area with the main yard and the original house.
The property was also on a slope, so the overall grading had to be adjusted to make the whole yard more useful. The goal was not simply to make the yard look nice in photos. The goal was to make the full property function better.
Permitting, Setbacks, and the Cul-de-Sac Challenge
The permitting and setback issues were more complicated than they first appeared because the backyard is bordered by a cul-de-sac. That created questions about how the yard should be interpreted, what counted as the backyard, and how setbacks from the street should apply.
This kind of issue can make or break a small-space project. If the setbacks are interpreted too restrictively, the yard can lose the very space needed to make the project functional. Garden View had to work through the city and permitting process, using reasonable planning, engineering, and explanation to help develop a practical setback approach from the street. Garden View employs a full-time permit manager for this exact reason. The goal was to allow the yard to be used to its fullest while still respecting the city’s requirements.
This is one of the hidden parts of complex landscape construction. Homeowners usually see the finished pool, deck, plantings, and outdoor living space. But before that can happen, the project often has to survive plan review, zoning questions, setback interpretations, engineering details, and city comments.
Garden View has experience working through these issues. On this project, that experience helped preserve the usability of the yard and made the final design possible.
Creating Outdoor Living Between the House and ADU
The space between the main house and the ADU became an important outdoor living zone. We fit an entertainment area with outdoor TV, dining and cooking areas, and a Trex deck with views of the pool and yard. The dining area is off to the side of the main house, while the entertainment area is located between the two buildings.
This layout helps the space serve both the homeowners and the ADU residents. It creates a shared outdoor experience without making the yard feel confused or overcrowded. The pool area and yard can be enjoyed by both the main residence and the ADU, while privacy planting helps soften and separate the spaces where needed.
The Trex deck was an important part of the design because it created a clean, comfortable outdoor room between the structures. It gives the family a place to sit, eat, watch TV, and look out toward the pool and landscape. On a small property, a well-placed deck can make the yard feel larger because it organizes how people move and gather.
ADU Access from the Lower Area
The ADU needed its own access from the lower area. That had to be worked into the grading, pool placement, privacy planting, and circulation. An ADU changes the way a backyard functions. The yard is no longer only for the main house. It must also consider the daily use, privacy, and access needs of the ADU residents.
This project shows how a backyard with an ADU can still feel beautiful and connected rather than crowded. The key is planning the circulation early. Access, privacy, steps, gates, decks, planting, and outdoor rooms all have to be coordinated.
Garden View’s design helped make the ADU part of the property without letting it consume the yard. The pool, spa, deck, entertainment area, dining area, and plantings all work together to create a shared but organized outdoor environment.
Privacy Planting for Both Living Areas
Privacy was another major design goal. Because the property now includes both the original house and the ADU, planting had to be used carefully to provide screening where needed for both the homeowners and the ADU residents.
Privacy planting is not just about putting in tall plants. It has to consider views, windows, seating areas, pool use, walkways, neighboring properties, sunlight, maintenance, and the mature size of the plants. In a small yard, the wrong plant in the wrong place can quickly become a problem.
Garden View used planting to soften the built elements, create privacy, and make the yard feel more comfortable. The goal was to create separation where needed without making the yard feel boxed in.
Fruit Trees, Vegetable Garden, and Productive Landscape Areas
Even with the small yard, the client wanted productive landscape elements. We fit fruit trees into the design and also created a vegetable garden between the front and back yards, separated from the cul-de-sac.
This is another example of careful space planning. A compact property does not have to be limited to hardscape and pool space. With the right layout, it can include food production, outdoor dining, entertainment, water, privacy, and planting.
The vegetable garden was placed where it could be useful without interfering with the pool, deck, ADU access, or entertainment areas. These small decisions make a big difference in how a property functions day to day.
Front Yard Transformation
The front yard also needed major attention. Before the project, the front yard was mostly dead and dominated by a large existing tree with roots migrating through the yard. Rather than remove the big tree, Garden View worked around it. We raised the soil level, installed root guards, created a new walkway, added gates and fencing to enclose the front yard, and installed three seedless olive trees along with a beautiful new landscape.
This front yard transformation was important because it changed the arrival experience of the home. The residence had been remodeled, and the landscape needed to match that improvement. The new walkway, fencing, gates, olive trees, and planting created a more finished and inviting entrance.
By keeping the large tree and managing the root issue, we preserved an important mature element while still improving the usability and appearance of the front yard. The result is a front landscape that feels intentional, welcoming, and appropriate for the updated residence.
A Complete Small-Space Design/Build Solution
This Sierra Madre project required far more than fitting a pool into a small yard. It required a complete design/build solution for a property changed by an ADU, a slope, difficult setbacks, privacy needs, children’s safety planning, and limited space.
Garden View helped turn a simple spa request into a compact pool and spa environment. We placed the pool so a kiddie protection fence could be used. We shaped the pool to respond to the grade change between the main house and the lower ADU. We worked through city and permitting challenges created by the cul-de-sac and setback interpretation. We created useful outdoor living between the house and ADU with a Trex deck, dining, cooking, and outdoor TV. We provided ADU access from the lower area. We added fruit trees, privacy planting, a vegetable garden, and a complete front yard renovation.
The result is a small property that lives much larger than it looks. The pool and spa create a resort feeling. The deck and entertainment area create a comfortable outdoor room. The dining and cooking area support everyday use. The planting provides privacy and beauty. The front yard welcomes people to the remodeled home. The ADU and main house both benefit from a yard that has been carefully organized instead of crowded.
For homeowners in Sierra Madre, Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, San Marino, La Cañada Flintridge, South Pasadena, and nearby communities, this project shows what is possible when a difficult small yard is planned correctly. ADUs, slopes, setbacks, small lots, children’s safety needs, and privacy issues do not have to prevent a beautiful outdoor living space. They simply require a contractor who understands how to solve those problems.
Garden View Landscape, Nursery & Pools specializes in complete outdoor environments where design and construction have to work together. This small-space pool oasis in Sierra Madre is a clear example of how careful planning, permitting experience, grading solutions, pool construction, planting, and outdoor living design can turn a tight, complicated yard into a beautiful and highly functional family space.
