Tucked into a lush, tree-lined property in Altadena, California, this backyard transformation showcases Garden View’s signature blend of traditional elegance and functional outdoor living. Designed to feel like a private estate retreat, the space seamlessly connects a charming French Country-style pool house, an intimate sunken fire pit lounge, and a resort-caliber geometric pool and raised spa, all unified by warm materials and thoughtful landscape architecture.

At the heart of the design sits a custom-built pool house with a steep pyramidal shingle roof, stucco cladding, and hand-laid brick quoining framing the entry door. Soft exterior sconce lighting and a white timber pergola create a welcoming glow at dusk, extending the home’s architectural language into the yard and giving the space a sense of permanence and craftsmanship rarely found in typical backyard builds.

Just steps away, a sunken conversation pit anchors the front lawn area. Built with a curved, brick-capped stucco retaining wall, this custom fire feature includes a built-in bench seat topped with weather-resistant cushions, creating an intimate gathering space for evening entertaining. A gravel surround and gently curving concrete pathway lead guests naturally from the fire pit toward the pool terrace, reinforcing the relaxed, garden-estate feel that defines the entire property.

On the pool side, Garden View designed a geometric rectangular pool paired with a raised, stacked-stone spa, a design approach we call “geometric traditional.” This style balances clean, formal pool lines with rustic, textured stone veneer, giving the hardscape warmth without sacrificing the structured symmetry that traditional landscape design calls for. Wide-format stone coping and expansive concrete decking provide ample space for lounging, dining, and poolside entertaining, while a matching white pergola over the patio ties the pool area visually back to the pool house.

Throughout the property, manicured boxwood hedges, layered ornamental plantings, and a sweeping, healthy lawn complete the classic aesthetic. Rather than a stark, minimalist backyard, this design leans into an established, old-world garden feel; the kind of yard that looks like it’s always been part of the home rather than a recent addition.
