    This Pasadena project shows how Garden View Landscape, Nursery & Pools can turn a very small backyard into a functional, attractive, Craftsman-style outdoor living space. The client wanted a pool that could support mini laps, relaxation, entertaining, and family use, but the available space was extremely limited. The challenge was to fit the pool close enough to the house to make the layout work, while still leaving useful access, places to gather, and enough green space so the yard would not feel like a concrete jungle.

    Because the yard was small, every material had to do more than one job. Artificial grass was used around the pool because it functions much like paving while still keeping the yard green and softer in appearance. It can handle foot traffic, furniture, pool use, chlorine, and salt, but it avoids the feeling of the entire backyard being hard concrete. This helped the space feel more open, comfortable, and livable.

    The pool was designed with a Baja shelf directly next to the spa, which has become one of the most commented-on features of the project. People can sit on the Baja shelf, cool off in shallow water, or move into the spa to warm up while still being close enough to talk with each other. In a small yard, that relationship matters. The pool, spa, and shelf had to feel connected rather than crowded.

    At the end of the pool, Garden View installed a Craftsman-inspired but minimalistic fountain. The fountain provides movement, creates a visual focal point, and adds enough water sound to help soften nearby noise and slightly mask conversations from carrying clearly to the neighbors. It gives the pool more life without overwhelming the compact design.

    The project also required important construction and site problem-solving. A large, messy ash tree was attacking the foundation of the house and stood in the way of building the pool, so it had to be removed. Privacy hedging was installed between the neighbors, giving the small yard a greener feeling without making it feel boxed in.

    Permitting added another layer of difficulty. Because commercial properties were nearby, the homeowners needed a taller protective fence on one side of the property. The fence height exceeded the standard code allowance, so Garden View worked through the permitting process to obtain a signed-off exception. This was more complicated because the commercial property was considered Altadena, while the residence sits on the border in Pasadena, requiring coordination with two different city permitting offices.

    The back part of the yard was planned to allow room for outdoor dining and a ping pong table, giving the family more ways to use the space beyond swimming. The finished project includes a compact pool, spa, Baja shelf, artificial grass, privacy hedging, fountain, access, entertaining space, and a Craftsman-style landscape that feels useful and inviting.
