Columnar cactus, branching with age. Slow growing in pots, fairly fast (to 8 ft. tall and 2 ft. wide) in open ground. Light brown, bristly, ½-2-in.-long thorns are usually concealed in long white hair that covers plant. Hair is especially long and dense near summit. Tubular, pink, 2-in.-long flowers in spring. Protect from hard frosts.
