Functional Relationship

This yard emanates functional elegance, seamlessly blending various elements to create an inviting and sophisticated outdoor space. There is a dedicated patio seating area with a fire pit that creates a harmonious relationship with the home’s living room, transitioning smoothly to the outside pool area. A BBQ and dining area align in perfect relationship with the kitchen, providing ample space to relax and use the elevated spa that has a waterfall flowing into the pool. The Baja shelf for lounging and cooling off creates a connection between the spa and pool. Formal and symmetrical steps provide inviting intersections between the various parts of the yard, including a half-court basketball court not shown in the pictures.

The palette we were given was a sloping backyard dropping almost 7 feet from the oak trees’ side of the yard along the house to the bottom area. The owners envisioned a functional yard for entertaining, eating, enjoying a pool and spa, and including a lawn and basketball court for the kids, built with a rustic, formal, modern aesthetic.

The pool features a discreet cover hidden beneath pavers at its base, while elevation changes add both interest and functionality. A waterfall flowing from the spa to the pool introduces movement, enhancing the serene atmosphere. The natural perimeter of oak trees and informal planting gives the impression that the house and pool are nestled within a natural oasis.

The textures of concrete borders combined with pavers create a beautiful contrast. The modern lines of the design are complemented by materials that remain true to the house’s classic style, achieving a contemporary yet timeless feel.
