Modern Zen Arcadia

The light in this project highlights various features while integrating other principles of art. It emphasizes the striking, formally placed pots and enhances the movement in water features. Up-lights on trees, casting interesting shadows against the purposely blank walls, add depth. The fire pit at the far side of the yard creates a sense of distance, while the illuminated pool adds a relaxing value to the space.

The owners’ vision was to remodel the entire yard with a Zen and slight Feng Shui touch while updating the rundown pool and deck and building an enclosed patio area.

We designed and built water features that flow towards the house. The pots provide a formal, simple, yet dramatic focus. We repurposed the existing old exposed aggregate paving by cutting it into smaller squares and reusing them in the yard. Grass strips create a soft relief from the abundant hardscapes.

The high desert flagstone, with its earthy tones and natural texture, is artfully repeated in the low pilasters, water features, coping, and fire pit, establishing a cohesive relationship across the landscape. The pergola is covered with a torch-down roof, which minimizes the pitch needed, and the ceiling is shiplap Douglas Fir, adding a warm and inviting touch to the space.
