Pasadena Foothill Lagoon Pool & Spa Oasis

Foothill properties in Pasadena come with a built-in advantage—views, privacy, mature trees—and one built-in challenge: grade. This backyard slopes the way so many lots do up against the mountains, and the homeowner didn’t want to “fight” that natural shape with something rigid or overbuilt. The goal was to create a true escape that felt like it belonged there, flowing with the land instead of flattening it.

The result is a backyard oasis that feels equal parts resort and nature preserve—layered, warm, and full of little moments that make you want to stay outside longer.

Designing with the slope, not against it

The heart of the plan was to turn the elevation change into an experience. Instead of one large flat pad, the yard was shaped into a series of spaces that step gently with the terrain. Each area has its own purpose, and each transition feels intentional—stone underfoot, planting that softens edges, and lighting that brings the landscape to life after dark.

A remote-controlled spa that spills into a lap pool

One of the standout features is the spa-to-pool relationship. The spa sits above the lap pool and “lands” into it, creating a clean visual line while adding movement and sound. It’s the kind of detail that makes the whole space feel custom. With remote control, the spa is ready when you are—flip it on from inside, step out, and the yard is instantly in “evening mode.”

A bridge, a hammock, and a backyard with destinations

This isn’t a yard where everything happens in one spot. It’s designed to be explored. A bridge creates a natural crossing and adds that subtle “garden journey” feeling. A tucked-away hammock area gives you a quieter place to reset. And a putting green adds a playful element that fits right into the relaxed, resort-style vibe.

Firelight, water, and the best kind of nights outside

The firepit becomes the gathering point once the sun goes down. Between the glow of the flames, the shimmer of the pool, and the layered landscape lighting, the yard transforms at night. It’s cozy without feeling crowded—just enough light to feel welcoming, while still letting the space feel like a retreat.

Designed and delivered end-to-end

This project was designed by Richard Riedel, who carried it through from concept to completion. The end result feels cohesive because it was guided with a clear vision from start to finish—every element working together: the stonework, the planting, the water features, and the way the yard moves with the hillside.
