South Pasadena Tiny Yard Full of Function

Symmetry doesn’t have to be obvious or equal on opposite sides to produce a sense of balance and relationship. Subtle symmetry can create a subconscious feeling of harmony and order within a space. This very small backyard has a lot packed into it but does not overwhelm with complexity. Symmetry and balance are achieved through parallel lines repeated in the paving, topiary hedges, water features, furniture arrangement, and the central placement of the fireplace relative to the back door.

The owners envisioned creating a functional space in this tiny yard for entertaining, lounging, swimming, and playing, including a ping pong table and other games. This house, built on a slope, presents a unique architectural challenge. The entrance is located upstairs, and accessing the backyard requires descending a staircase. The small backyard, combined with difficult access, posed significant challenges for moving equipment and materials. A conveyor belt was employed to transport soil from the pool excavation and other materials up and down the narrow 40-step staircase.

The pool itself functions as a retaining wall. To introduce movement, the owner selected dripping tiles complemented by cascading waterfalls. Despite the yard’s small size, we designed a cohesive array of features to ensure a harmonious and non-chaotic appearance. Various complementary materials were used to create texture, including artificial grass strips and an intriguing paving pattern that adds an element of surprise.

An outdoor seating area with a beautiful modern fireplace, crafted from rustic materials, enhances the space. Succulents, chosen for most of the planting, possess a structured and architectural appearance. The hedges add value and provide a soft contrast, enhancing the functionality and aesthetic of the small but highly functional backyard.
