West Covina Hillside Resort Backyard

This West Covina backyard was designed with one non-negotiable in mind: the view stays the star.

Perched above the valley, the property already had that “wow” factor—city lights at night, mountains at sunset, wide open sky in every direction. The goal was to build a complete outdoor living space that felt like a private resort, while keeping the layout clean and intentional so nothing competed with the horizon.

The infinity edge that makes the whole yard

The centerpiece is the vanishing-edge pool. From the main patio, the water seems to spill right into the skyline, which instantly gives the space that high-end, vacation-at-home feeling. It’s not just about looks either—this edge creates a natural focal line that pulls your eye outward, making the entire backyard feel larger and more open.

A spa made for golden hour

Set just off the pool, the spa is positioned like a front-row seat. It’s close enough to be part of the action, but tucked in a way that feels a little more private—perfect for a quiet soak while the sun drops behind the hills. The stone detailing around the spa keeps the look grounded and natural, tying everything back into the landscape.

Pergola dining + outdoor kitchen = instant hangout zone

A backyard like this needs a place where people naturally gather, so we built the living space around a pergola dining area and outdoor kitchen. It’s shaded, comfortable, and set up for real use—weeknight dinners, weekend grilling, and those long evenings that turn into “one more glass of wine.”

String lights under the pergola add warmth without overpowering the view, and once the pool lighting comes on, the whole space shifts into nighttime mode in the best way.

A firepit overlook for the “after swim” moments

One of the standout features is the firepit lounge, positioned as its own destination. It’s the kind of spot that gets used year-round—catching the sunset, warming up after a swim, or just sitting out to take in the valley lights. The stonework and planting around it keep it feeling tucked into the hillside rather than floating on top of it.

Planting that frames the view, not blocks it

With an open, view-heavy property, the landscaping has to be thoughtful. We kept plantings lower where the sightlines matter most, then used palms, color, and layered textures to frame the spaces around the pool and patio areas. The result is lush and finished, but still airy—nothing gets in the way of what you came out here to see.

The end result

This West Covina backyard is a true destination at home: a dramatic infinity-edge pool, a spa made for sunset, and multiple outdoor “rooms” that make entertaining effortless. Daytime feels like a resort. Nighttime feels like you own the skyline.
