Using Rain to Conserve Water

After a good rain, give your irrigation system a break and let the soil do the work. Deep moisture now helps build deeper roots and a more resilient landscape.

Simple rule: Keep your irrigation controller off for as long as reasonable after rainfall. Let nature irrigate for you.

Recent rains can water landscapes deeply. Roots are still growing this time of year, and we want to encourage them to grow down into the soil. Over-watering tends to keep roots near the surface. As the ground gradually dries, roots will naturally be encouraged to grow deeper while searching for moisture—making plants tougher and more drought-tolerant over time.
